Soybean variety trials in Rochester, MN
Performance comparisons of early (1.1-1.8) and late (1.9-2.4) maturity glyphosate and or dicamba tolerant soybean in southeastern Minnesota are now available. Yields for 23 early-maturity entries ranged from 48.8 to 63.6 bushels per acre and from 55.1 to 64.4 bu/a for the 21 late- maturity entries.

Study details

The studies were conducted near Rochester, MN (Lawler site) on a Port Byron silt loam:
  • Planted May 18, 2018 with a 4-row John Deere planter equipped with cone units.
  • Seeding rate: 150,000 seeds per acre at a depth of 1.5 inches.
  • Row spacing: 30-inch rows.
  • Plot size: 4 rows by 22 feet.
  • Machine harvested center 2 rows of each plot on October 18, 2018.

Power in study design

The power of our research is that we lay out trials in a statistically sound manner, with randomized and replicated treatments at each location, to help take out effects due to variability across the field (e.g. soil type, drainage, topography, pest pressure, etc.). Each variety was randomly placed into each block or replication. We used four blocks of the treatments (replications), which is considered the standard for field research. We then conducted statistical analysis on the results to help determine if any numerical differences in yield were likely due to actual differences in performance or other factors we couldn’t control.

In the tables that follow, moisture and yield results followed by the same letter are considered not statistically different.

What do the letters in the table mean?

For varieties followed by the same letter, we would not expect to see a difference in yield in the field. Even though the average yield of varieties in this case may be numerically different by a few bushels, there was enough variability in yield across replications that no real trend could be found. In other words, we can't say with confidence that these varieties differ in yield.

Consider a comparison between variety X vs Y. If variety X yielded more than Y in two replications, and Y more than X in the others, these likely would come out statistically the same. In another example, variety X may out-yield Y in one replication by quite a bit, but then yield less than Y in the other three replications. Here again, these likely would not be considered statistically different, although the average yields may not be numerically the same.

The LSD is the "least significant difference" or the minimum difference in yield we need to see before we can say with confidence that there is a true difference in yield between a pair of varieties. The more variability in yield across a plot, the larger the LSD.

The p value (P in the tables below) indicates the probability or confidence we have that two entries differ in yield when the difference is equal to or greater than the LSD. When P = 0.10, this indicates we can be 90% confident variety X performs better than variety Y if the yield difference is equal to or greater than the LSD. Likewise, if P = .20, we would have 80% confidence the two varieties differ in yield when the yield difference is equal to or greater than the LSD. For variety trials, a p value of .10 or .20 is considered standard.

For more information about interpretation of the LSD, see the articles Field studies: What do you mean 5 bushels per acre is not significant? or How to do research on your farm.

2018 Soybean yield results

Tables 1 and 2 provide the yield for the early maturity entries at 13% moisture by entry and yield rank, respectively. Early maturity soybean yield average was 56.7 bu/a with a range of 63.6-48.8 bu/a.

Tables 3 and 4 provide the yield for the late maturity entries at 13% moisture by entry and yield rank, respectively. Late maturity soybean yield average was 61.5 bu/a. with a range of 65.6-55.1 bu/a.
