Strategic Farming: Optimizing management for 2020

The Strategic Farming series provides up-to-date crop production strategies to help you optimize your inputs for the 2020 growing season. The series included 5 one-hour webinars with university specialists; each webinar focused on a different topic area and included time for Q&A with the participants:
  • A back to basics approach for nutrient management with Dan Kaiser, Extension nutrient management specialist and Brad Carlson, Extension educator in water quality
  • Soybean management for 2020 and beyond with Seth Naeve, Extension soybean agronomist and Bob Koch, Extension soybean entomologist 
  • Cover crops: Matching your management strategies and goals with Axel Garcia y Garcia, Agronomist - Sustainable crop systems and Paulo Pagliari, Nutrient management specialist 
  • New pests and pathogens complicate corn and soybean production with Bruce Potter, IPM specialist on soybean gall midge and Dean Malvick, Extension plant pathologist on tar spot in corn and frogeye leaf spot in soybean. 
  • Hot topics in weed management: Putting the pieces together with Lisa Behnken and Jared Goplen, Extension educators - crops.

Soybean Symposium

The theme for the 2020 Soybean Symposium centered around the question - “How resilient is our global food system?” Demand and supply side topics considered the effects of several factors on the current global food system (tariffs, novel diseases, climate and societal challenges):

Essential row crop management

This “socially distant” webinar series was a collaboration between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and University of Minnesota Extension. Specialists from both states provided a daily webinar for farmers, ag professionals, Extension personnel and other interested parties during the week of April 6. Each 30-minute webinar included a short discussion on a key topic followed by time for questions and answers.
