by Dave Nicolai, Institute for Ag Professionals program coordinator
The 2021 Research Update sessions are scheduled virtually for three sessions: Southern MN: Waseca, Rochester and Lamberton locations programming emphasis (Jan 5th), Northern MN: Crookston location programming emphasis (Jan 7th) & Central MN: Willmar and Morris locations programming emphasis (Jan 12th) from 9:00 am–3:30 pm for each of the three sessions.
The program will feature research-based strategies to deal with today's changing pests, diseases, varieties, nutrient and environmental recommendations. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for Certified Crop Advisors have been applied for, including: 1 in Nutrient Management, 2.5 in Pest Management, 1.5 in Crop Management at the Southern & Central MN sessions (January 5th and 12th). The Northern MN session (January 7th) includes: 1 in Crop Management, 0.5 in Nutrient Management, 0.5 in Soil & Water and 3 in Pest Management.
After all the big management decisions (genetics, fertility, tillage etc.) that determine yield potential in a field, come the crop protection decisions (traits, crop deployment, herbicides, insecticides & fungicides). The erratic pendulum swing in crop prices in recent years has certainly wreaked havoc on crop budgets and these crop protection choices. In this presentation, Dr. Ostlie will examine visions of corn rootworm management in this era of “Big Data”, remote sensing, robotics, improved application technology, new insecticides and transgenic technology. As we contemplate visions of management, he will address the science and reality of these options using MN corn rootworm data.
Recent research on major macronutrients have necessitated changes in the corn fertilizer guidelines. In this session Dr. Kaiser will go over some of the changes to the corn fertilizer guidelines discussing why changes have been made and also future changes which may be coming based on current research. Two areas of emphasis will be changes that were made to the phosphorus fertilizer guidelines which now include a removal based phosphorus option and potential changes to the potassium guidelines which are currently undergoing research using field trials across the state of Minnesota.
In this presentation, the results of the state variety trials for spring wheat will be presented and strength and weaknesses of new public and private releases will be discussed. In addition the results of the Wheat Stem Sawfly screening nursery and the Wheat Stem Sawfly management tactics will be discussed. In addition, an update will be provided on the latest the US Wheat & Barley Scab Initiative’s Integrated Management Coordinated Project research findings and current fungicide recommendations to manage Fusarium Head Blight and other leaf diseases.
