Corn & soybean pest management field days reminder: Lamberton and Rosemount

Learn about research being conducted in crop diseases and insect pests at University of Minnesota's Corn and soybean disease and corn rootworm management field days in Lamberton or Rosemount!

Lamberton - Southwest Research and Outreach Center

  • When: Wednesday, August 31; 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Where: 23669 130th St. Lamberton, MN
  • Cost: No fee to attend
  • Pre-registration: Preferred by Friday, August 26. Pre-registration will ensure a meal.

Field day agenda

In case of inclement weather, the speakers will present inside. Certified Crop Advisor credits in Integrated Pest Management (3 credits) will be available for participants.
  • 8:30 - Registration
  • 9:00 - Corn rootworm management
Bruce Potter, Extension Integrated Pest Management Specialist, will lead a tour of corn rootworm research on management options. Bring your questions for an interactive discussion on soil insecticides, transgenic traits, including currently available pyramids of Bt traits, scouting, and the implications of Bt resistance and weather on the status of rootworm populations.
  • 10:00 - Soybean cyst nematode management
Dr. Seth Naeve, Extension soybean agronomist, will discuss soybean cyst nematode (SCN) management. A focus will be on resistance management and the common virulence on the most common source of genetic SCN resistance available to farmers. Naeve will discuss awareness (soil sampling) and management strategies (variety selection and seed treatments) for SCN. Naeve will also provide insight on the interactions between SCN and another common malady - iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC).
  • 11:00 - Weed management techniques
Dr. Debalin Sarangi, Extension weed scientist, will lead a tour of weed research plots. Sarangi will present information on corn and soybean weed management research and the status of herbicide resistance in Minnesota. Weed research plots on the timing and efficacy of PRE and POST herbicide applications and herbicide resistance will be topics for discussion. The focus will be on strategies to optimize weed control and delay the development of herbicide resistance.
  • 12:00 - Lunch
Call the SWROC at 507-752-7372 with questions.

Rosemount Research and Outreach Center

Field day program

Certified Crop Advisor credits in Integrated Pest Management (3 credits) will be available for participants.

Crop diseases session

Sudden death syndrome.

Dr. Dean Malvick, U of MN Extension Specialist for corn and soybean diseases, will lead demonstrations and discussions about sudden death syndrome (SDS) and other soybean diseases and on the corn disease tar spot. We'll visit a SDS field study that includes different seed treatments and different levels of varietal resistance to determine how they influence development of SDS. We'll also see and discuss other stem and leaf samples and get updates on corn tar spot. This will be a good opportunity to see and learn more about management and diagnosis of these diseases.

Corn rootworm session

The corn rootworm session, led by Bruce Potter, Extension Integrated Pest Management Specialist, will include an update on management options. Bring your questions for an interactive discussion on soil insecticides, transgenic traits, including currently available pyramids of Bt traits, scouting, and the implications of Bt resistance and weather on the status of rootworm populations.

Soybean insect pests

Dr. Bob Koch, Extension soybean entomologist, will provide an update on the status of soybean aphid infestations in Minnesota, performance of some of the currently registered insecticides for soybean aphid control and insecticide resistance management. In addition, Bob will address the status of beneficial insects for the control of soybean aphids. We'll also have updates on soybean gall midge and hog-peanut leafminer activity in Minnesota crop fields this year.

Directions to the Rosemount field day

The Rosemount Research and Outreach Center is located off of 160th St. (CR 46) between MN-Hwys. 3 and 52. Enter on Arkansas Avenue and look for signs.
