Learn about research being conducted in crop diseases and insect pests at University of Minnesota's Corn and soybean disease and corn rootworm management field day on September 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Rosemount Research and Outreach Center. Registration will occur from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

The crop diseases session, led by Dr. Dean Malvick, U of MN Extension Specialist for corn and soybean diseases, will include demonstrations and discussions about the soybean disease sudden death syndrome (SDS) and others and on the corn disease tar spot. We will visit a SDS field study in Rosemount that includes different seed treatments and different levels of varietal resistance to determine how they influence development of SDS. We'll also see and discuss other stem and leaf samples and get updates on corn tar spot. This will be a good opportunity to see and learn more about management and diagnosis of these diseases.

The corn rootworm session, led by Bruce Potter, Extension Integrated Pest Management Specialist, will include an update on management options. Bring your questions for an interactive discussion on soil insecticides, transgenic traits, including currently available pyramids of Bt traits, scouting, and the implications of Bt resistance and weather on the status of rootworm populations.

Dr. Bob Koch, Extension soybean entomologist, will provide an update on the status of soybean aphid infestations in Minnesota, performance of some of the currently registered insecticides for soybean aphid control and insecticide resistance management. In addition, Bob will address the status of beneficial insects for the control of soybean aphids. We'll also have updates on soybean gall midge and hog-peanut leafminer activity in Minnesota crop fields this year.

There is no cost to attend the Field Day and lunch is included. However, registration is required by 5:00 p.m. on August 30th to reserve your space for the field day and obtain an accurate count for a light lunch immediately follow the tours.
