Strip-till Expo to showcase cost-saving practices for Minnesota farmers

Minnesota farmers facing tight margins, rising input costs, and increasing weather variability will have the opportunity to evaluate a practical, proven system at the 2026 Strip-Till Expo, hosted by University of Minnesota Extension.

The event will take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center in Lamberton, Minnesota.

Strip-tillage is gaining momentum across the state as farmers look for ways to reduce costs while maintaining yield and improving resilience. Research and on-farm experience in Minnesota show that strip-till can reduce soil loss by approximately two tons per acre while maintaining or improving profitability compared to conventional systems. Fewer field passes also mean lower fuel use, reduced labor, and less equipment wear.

“With today’s economic pressures, farmers are looking for systems that improve efficiency without sacrificing productivity,” said Jodi DeJong-Hughes, UMN Extension Educator. “Strip-till is one option that’s showing strong results, and this event gives farmers a chance to see it in action before making decisions on their own operations.”

A key feature of the Expo is side-by-side strip-till equipment demonstrations, allowing attendees to compare multiple systems operating in the same field under the same conditions. Participants will also hear directly from experienced strip-till farmers and University of Minnesota researchers who study soil health and crop performance across Minnesota.

Interest in strip-till continues to grow alongside Minnesota’s $37 million investment in soil health practices through 2028, which includes cost-share opportunities and technical assistance through local Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs). The Expo provides a hands-on setting for farmers and conservation professionals to better understand how strip-till performs in real-world conditions.

The event is free to attend, thanks to sponsor support, but pre-registration is requested to assist with meal planning.
