The Nitrogen Smart program has a five-year track record of success, with 94% of attendees saying they would recommend attendance to another person. Nitrogen Smart focuses on how nitrogen behaves in the environment with an emphasis on helping farmers determine the best practices for nitrogen fertilizer application on their own farm, based on their own field and environmental conditions.

Previously, Nitrogen Smart sessions have been offered in-person or as an online course. While there is currently a pause in in-person programming due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are pleased to announce a schedule of virtual events in addition to the online course.

Nitrogen Smart Fundamentals

The original Fundamentals course will be divided into two parts, taking place over two days:
The Fundamentals session covers sources of nitrogen (N) for crops, how N is lost from soil and how you can reduce losses, how to manage N in drainage systems, and more. We recommend taking the Fundamentals course before taking Advanced Nitrogen Smart.

Advanced Nitrogen Smart

The Advanced Nitrogen Smart course will cover “A Deep Dive into the 4Rs” and will be split into three parts over the weeks of March 1st, 8th, and 15th. These will be offered on Monday afternoons and duplicated on Tuesday mornings.
This course is centered on the idea that the goal of soil fertility to apply the right source of nutrient, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place.
