Private pesticide applicator recertification options for 2024

By Tana Haugen-Brown, Extension Educator and Private Pesticide Applicator Program Manager, PSEE

Private pesticide applicators who need to renew their private applicator certification by March 1, 2024, to use restricted-use pesticides, have through the end of February to do so to keep their certification from expiring. If you are unsure of your applicator status, you can check your certification status here: https://z.umn.edu/PPAlookupMDA. There are several options to recertify in 2024. The cost is $75 for each option and certification is good for three years. Here are the options to recertify through the end of February:

Option 1: Attend an in-person workshop

Workshops have begun and they offer a great opportunity to review regulations and safety issues related to pesticide application while providing you with the latest University research on integrated pest management. A complete list of remaining workshops can be found at www.pat.umn.edu.

Anyone attending a workshop for recertification must bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport, and your Private Pesticide Applicator Certification Card or number. You must attend the entire workshop to meet recertification requirements.

Workshop check-in will start 30 minutes before the posted start time. Walk-ins are welcome. For walk-ins, payment will be collected by check only. Pre-registration is also available (requires credit card payment), up to 3 days before the event at www.pat.umn.edu (sorry, no pre-registration is available by phone, mail, or email).

Before heading out to a workshop we encourage you to check for any last-minute updates. A workshop may be canceled or postponed due to facility issues, illness, or bad weather.
  • If you pre-registered online, check your email for a cancelation notice.
  • Check our website at www.pat.umn.edu
  • Call the Farm Information Line at 1-800-232-9077 or fil@umn.edu.

Option 2: Attend an online workshop

Attend an online Zoom workshop (Feb 14, 7:45 – 11:45 am – Fruit & Vegetable grower focused OR Feb 29, 9:00 – 12:30 – crops grower focused). Space is very limited and pre-registration is required. See more details at www.pat.umn.edu.

Option 3: Take an online exam

Take the exam online by going to www.pat.umn.edu and clicking on the “Exam” section. The Private Pesticide Applicator study manual (19th edition), which helps with the test, is available online at no cost.

Option 4: Take the written exam

Take the mail-in written exam by picking up an exam packet or study manual at most county Extension offices.

Are you a new applicator or your certification has expired? If you have never been certified or your certification has already expired, you MUST take the exam either online or by the mail-in option to receive your certification. Exam options close on October 31, 2024. After successfully becoming certified, you will be eligible for recertification options when it is time to renew in 3 years.
